How to apply eyeshadow/tips/basics ?
Sorry for the repost but I only received one decent answer last time I posted this:
Ok, so I’ve decided I want to start playing around with make up more, particularly eye shadow. I’ve never been very girly (until recently I magically had some kind of personality shift and dyed my hair pink and started wearing dresses every day) so I know pretty much nothing beyond the basics; foundation, powder, concealer, eye liner and mascara. Eye shadow looks like a fun accessory and a great way to express yourself. I’m ready to start slapping crazy colors on my lids but I want to do it right and make it look good ….
So, I’m here looking for some advice or tips on how to start out. I already know there are tons of tutorials on YouTube and I intend to watch them all. But I’m confused when it comes to what to buy :
1.) What kinds of eye shadow should I get? The powdered kind or the cream kind?
2.) What kinds of brushes do I need. The basics, not every single brush that does every single thing. I know there’s so many kinds; primers, crease filler-inner thingies, etc. If someone could just let me know 3 or 4 basic types of brushes that are useful for standard techniques.
3.) I have fair skin, brown eyes, and constantly changing hair color. What basic shades ( I don’t intend to buy a damn 180 shade palette when I don’t even know what I’m doing yet ) should I start out with? Neutrals? Metallics? Blues? Greens? Purples?????
Please don’t be vague and general and just say “cream shadow” or “MAC stuff is good”. I would greatly appreciate detailed advice or suggestions : brand names, specific types of brushes, specific types of shadows. Remember, this is for someone just starting out with eye shadow. If someone could just give me a list of a few basics I should buy, that would be awesome.
Thanks so much in advance!

I sometimes just end up starting low end and sampling a few different ones. Do what fits your situation and Im sure your gut will be best.
What do you think? Answer below! You now can
Just like you, i started not knowing anything about makeup to knowing quite a bit about makeup so i hope that you find this answer hopefully and i hope that it helps!
1) Starting with eyeshadows, i tell everyone that you start with powder shadow since it is the most common and popular. No matter what color your eyes are you should always start out with neutrals and browns as they look good on everybody, these colors not only do they look good on everybody but they are so universal. For neutrals and browns, you can wear it as a wash of color as in going to shopping to wearing it more smokier like a night out with your girlfriends. So my safe bet is to get neutrals and browns. I’m going to give a few neutrals and brown eyeshadows (they are all MAC) but once you get the idea of it you can definitely get dupes of the colors since a lot of the colors from mac are dupable
Neutrals:
All that glitters- One of my favorite color i use it so often! It’s a shimmery beige color with gold pearl in it
Naked lunch – I literally use it everyday no joke. It has very light shimmer in it, it’s a light pink with shimmer in it love it~
(Those are the two neutrals i would recommend you to get, they are all from mac and they cost 14.50 for the pan and 11 dollars for the refill ones but you need to purchase the palette if you are going to buy refills)
Browns:
Satin Taupe – This is a favorite to many, this is by far my favorite brown since you can wear it during the day and night. This is a taupe color with silver shimmer in it, it’s amazing!
Mulch – This is a shimmering brown more like bronze brown but more bronze, it looks really good for brown eyes!
Espresso, Wedge (These shadows have a matte finish in them which means that they dont contain any shimmer at all, espresso is just a darker version of wedge. This is a must have one of the other since this is great for the crease!)
(So these are just some of my suggestions, you really should go check it out by yourself and swatch the colors)
Because you are just starting out of makeup, i really don’t recommend you to get cream shadows since i dont find them any help.
*NOTE THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT: YOU MUST GET A EYE PRIMER. WHAT A EYE PRIMER DOES IS THAT IT WONT MAKE YOUR EYESHADOW MOVE OR DISAPPEAR COLOR. Either get urban decay primer potion or get two faced shadow insurance they are both 17 dollars so just pick either one. If you have oily lids then go for urban decay. But you MUST MUST MUST get a primer, you have to!
Also i really do recommend you to purchase one of those 88 matte palette or shimmer palette from ebay or coastalscent. Coastalscent is a lot more expensive and ebay is cheaper they are the same thing just depends on which one you prefer. Since you don’t know what colors you want to start with why not ge the 88 matte palette or shimmer? Since you can do a lot with them, it has browns, neutrals, greens, all the colors you can think of! And it’s so cheap on ebay it’s only around 10 dollars and on coastalscent it’s around 19 dollars.
For brushes, i think that brushes are definitely essential both face and eyes specifically eyes i think. Here are my recommendation for brushes again they are mac but if i can think of some dupes for mac brushes i’m going to state it.
239 brush – This is the most basic brush that everyone needs, it has the perfect amount of bristles on it to pack enough eyeshadow to your lid, it’s not too big it’s the perfect size! you can do so much with this brush like you can use it for highlight, putting color on your crease, on your waterline etc. This is around 22 dollars if i’m not mistaken.
There is a dupe for this brush and it’s called the Lowe Cornell Maxine mop 3/8 inch. You can find this brush in michaels and it’s very cheap it’s less than 3 dollars i think
217 crease brush – This brush is a must have, you can do so much with it. So multi-purpose. Specifically i use this brush to put color on my crease since it’s the perfect size and it fits perfectly! This brush can also be used as a blending brush, a highlight brush and a brush to pack color on your lids
224 blending brush – Everyone needs a blending brush no matter what, This brush is amazing for just blending out color, this brush can also be used as a light wash of color on your lids.
(To be honest, these are the 3 brushes that i think are the most useful and really all you need however obviously once you get into it, you can get more brushes but for now these 3 does the job)
If you think that mac brushes are expensive, you can check out http://www.coastalscents.com brushes, they are very cheap and amazing quality! you really should go check it out!
A lot of brands make good brushes for example sonia kashuk, beauty of essence which can be purchase in ulta i think and etc
A general rule of thumb is that mainly you work from light color to dark so a lighter shade on your lid and a darker shade on your crease.
